John Coltrane International Jazz & Blues Festival

John Coltrane’s family moved to High Point when he was just an infant. He and his parents lived with his grandparents and his cousin’s family in a house that was built by his grandfather in 1928. In 1939, Coltrane joined Warren B. Steele’s community band, starting out on alto horn and later moving to clarinet. The success of the community band inspired William Penn Principal, Samuel Burford to start a school band in 1940. Coltrane joined as a founding member of the school band under the direction of Grayce W. Yokely. Later, Coltrane developed an interest in the saxophone practicing with Charlie Haygood, a restaurant owner on Washington Street. By his senior year, Coltrane’s musical talents earned him the vote of “most musical.” He also earned a lyre for his participation with the Boys’ Chorus. While he wasn’t born in High Point, the city has claimed Coltrane and honored him with an 8 ft bronzed statue and marker. In addition to the City preserving his childhood home on Underhill Drive, the Friends of John Coltrane, LLC host an annual John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival at Oak Hollow Festival Park. This event brings thousands of jazz enthusiasts from across the world to pay tribute to Coltrane and be entertained by top Jazz artists in the industry.

Piedmont One Mic Acoustic Festival

An intimate festival dedicated to excellent musicianship and a love of acoustic music of all genres. Unlike many festivals we don’t divide acoustic music into “old-time” and “bluegrass”. We’re all long-time attendees to festivals and some of our favorite moments are the late-night jams where we hear acoustic jazz, old-time, bluegrass, Cajun, Klezmer and Piedmont Blues.

To this end, our festival requires performers, including bands to play into one microphone with no monitors (we may sneak an extra mic on the stage for bass players, but don’t count on it). Enjoy music from all ages.

Historic Paramount Theatre

Built in the 1920s, this renovated theater, located in Historic Downtown Burlington, features an art-deco motif and seating for 398 guests.  Home to Burlington’s community theatre group, The Gallery Players, and host to a variety of other theatrical events and performances.  The Paramount also features a lobby and mezzanine level for small private receptions and art exhibitions.
